We have never tracked SIC codes of customers before, but we are now. Is there someway of easily gathering the SIC codes of our existing set of customers?
For new customers, I am using the SIC codes provided on credit reports; however, to go back and pull 2,000 files or pull new credit reports would be a huge task. I have also found that there are many SIC codes in credit reports that are incorrect.
Here is a website that will help you find SIC codes based on key words, so you don't have to pore over the lists for each one. http://www.osha.gov/oshstats/sicser.html
Also, you will probably find that most of your customers fall into a fairly narrow range, or at least a small number of ranges, which should simplify getting the codes.
Are you just using the first four digits, or are you going further into specifics?
