Data Security Laws Enacted Throughout States

The number of Americans whose personal information has been breached – whether by mail, stolen laptops or inadvertent online postings – recently surpassed 100 million, according to Privacy Rights Clearinghouse.

To prevent identity theft and fraud resulting from such incidents, many states have enacted new laws in the past couple years. New legislation took effect Jan. 1 in Hawaii, Illinois, New Hampshire and Wisconsin, bringing the total number of states with ID theft-related laws – particularly those that allow consumers to place security freezes on their credit reports – to 24.
